Even the Celts, Romans and Alemanns worked in mines of the Black Forest region. Archaeological slag findings demonstrate that the settlers ran mines. Silver mining probably began in the 2nd century and the first mines were mentioned in 1028. In the 15th century the period of prosperity of the Black Forest mining ended. Not until the 19th century was the silver mining going on.
Mining Today
Many tourists visit the mining museum in Hausnach or in Oberwolfach. In addition, they visit educational trails or hiking paths.
